Green card photo for Form I-485: size and requirements

✓ Checked Oct 2026 against the official pages. See sources

Adjusting status with Form I-485? USCIS wants two identical 2 x 2 in passport-style photos. The size and head rules match a US passport photo, so PhotoFit's US passport option works. The check and preview are free; the final file and a 4x6 print sheet are $4.99.

How to make it

  1. Take the photo against a white wall in even light (see passport photo at home).
  2. Upload it below with "US passport" selected. PhotoFit crops to 2 x 2 in with the head and eyes in the ranges above.
  3. Download the 4x6 sheet, print it as a glossy 4x6 at a photo counter, and cut out two photos.

Tips for a photo that passes
  • Stand 2 to 4 feet in front of a plain white or off-white wall (or hang a white sheet). Step forward from the wall so no shadow falls behind you.
  • Have someone else take it from about 4 feet away, camera at eye level. Selfies at arm's length distort your face.
  • Face a window or a soft lamp so both sides of your face are evenly lit. No flash.
  • Take off glasses and hats. Neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed. Leave room above your head and show your shoulders.
  • Use the original camera photo, not a screenshot or a photo sent by text.

Questions

Is a green card photo the same as a passport photo?

The size and head-height rules are the same (2 x 2 in, head 1 to 1 3/8 in). USCIS also asks for thin glossy paper, two identical photos, and your name and A-Number lightly written on the back.

How recent must I-485 photos be?

The I-485 instructions say taken recently; the USCIS Policy Manual says within 30 days of filing.
